JNFC conducted its AGM on June 8th. Significant to note is the change in the Board of Directors. At the last AGM the Board approved an increase in the number of directors from 5 to 6. This position was not filled during the 2009/10 fiscal year.

In addition Judi Peacock tendered her resignation at the end of May. With three teenagers at home and working full time she doesn’t have a lot of spare time. Judi has been involved in JNFC since the start and as a member of JNFC will continue her support as a volunteer.

To fill the two vacancies there are now two new board members. John Wilton a semi retired pastor who brings a wealth of board experience, pastoral experience and knowledge, as well as a proven ability to get things done in a volunteer environment. Shannon Nichols a senior IT professional has wide consulting expertise and a strong business background.

Both John and Shannon have a heart for Africa and will help JNFC into the future.

For three weeks starting in late March Leanne, Jill, and Geoff were in Uganda. Their objectives on this trip were:
To deliver donated items to Action For Children in Uganda.
They took school supplies, baby clothes, tooth brushes, puppets, eye drops, laptops, books, and more. Many of the items were donated by JNFC supporters.
Immerse themselves in the community.
They were able to spend six days in the village near the school living with the locals without the usual amenities like running water, ice & electricity. This experience resembled camping for them but was a way of life for the locals.
Spend time at the school with the teachers, students, and the sponsorship program.
While staying in the village the days were spent at the school working with the students and the teachers. They were also able to visit the homes, of nearly all of the children currently sponsored through JNFC, to see the benefits of all of the sponsorship funding that has been donated by our child sponsors.
Review/visit current projects.
As well as visiting the sponsored children’s homes they were able to see some of the projects that have been completed. These included the pump for the bore hole on the school property. The desks and scholastic materials provided through the grant from the Rotary Club of Saanich.
Work on Uganda/Canada reporting.
While at the Action For Children head office in Kampala Geoff, Leanne and Jill were able to meet with the management and staff to improve the reporting process that occurs between AFC and JNFC. It is a priority for us to maintain the confidence of our donors, and to meet the new more stringent requirements of CRA to become a registered Canadian charity.
Address AFC immediate needs.
The JNFC Board approved funding for the Stokes’s to use while in Uganda to support immediate projects for AFC as long as they were in line with JNFC’s purpose. These undesignated funds were used to assist AFC with transportation through some major vehicle repairs and the purchase of five bicycles. This will greatly assist the AFC staff in getting around from the Head Office to the field offices, and for the field staff to visit the children and families. In addition there was enough money to purchase additional school supplies and to furnish First Aid supplies for use at the school.
Plan for future projects.
Our major activity will continue with our sponsorship program. Visiting the children and their families reconfirmed their commitment to this activity as it provides the long term support for the child that is required. There are a number of needs that have emerged at the school. The two most significant are the development of a school library and a sports field. As the school grows to include the higher grades these two facilities are increasingly important to provide the higher level of schooling that is required. These two items - Library and Sports Field are the new activities for JNFC to take on!

The trip was viewed as a success by the AFC staff and management as well as the JNFC board. Leanne’s comment on returning “Looking back on all of the things that we accomplished I don’t feel so bad that I am a bit tired now.”
As a footnote to all of our supporters none of the travel, accommodation, food or personal expenses on the trip were paid for by JNFC.
